To make it worse, I had a couple teachers who literally just gave the GATE kids extra homework. In elementary, there was a separate GATE class and then in middle school, it felt like all these AVID kids were encroaching on us. There was definitely resentment between some of the GATE kids and the AVID kids. Don't even get me started on binder checks.Īnd I wasn't in AVID, so it shouldn't have mattered, but since our classes were merged, all of those AVID requirements also applied to us. It's just not a very good way for my brain to organize information. Which, you know, note taking is an important part of college, but Cornell notes aren't the only notes. It's supposed to teach study skills and college preparedness, but it seems like all they did was take a bunch of Cornell notes. It was really pushed to be for first generation graduates, at least at my school. My GATE program had gifted kids and AVID kids in the same class and it was awful for both groups.įor anyone who doesn't know, AVID is a program that puts struggling or average students in advanced classes. Those people get a long, long damn way by the time they're old. When we talk "gifted kid" we really have to separate them out.īoy, there's a lot to be said for being an "average" kid from the jump who gets taught a decent set of self-discipline tools. So there's the two very different people. Well, babes, lets try doing our homework for a start, realizing that everything is fricken homework, and see where that gets us. "Gifted" in that they got put in gifted class in like 5th grade and now that's their identity even though they're really just average and can't understand why life doesn't work out like it should. By the time it's grownup hours, she's burnt all the way out.Īnd then the one we already discussed. She throws up before big tests, because if she doesn't get top marks, then, well, she doesn't want to think about that. It's only in adulthood that this energy finally has no place to go and she's got anxiety and shit. She probably does fine to excellent in college. Maybe her parents drove her, maybe something else, either way her problems are very different. One type really did get straight As the whole time, even in the hard classes, because she's Hermione, basically. When we talk "gifted kid" we're talking two very different people. This conversation is still kinda BS though. School boards hate poor metrics, especially with No Child Left Behind still in effect.Ĭombine that with the nonsense egos a lot of kids get, and you get people who half-ass most of their classes but get As and Bs thinking that they're super-geniuses when no, somebody just let you play on easy mode and you didn't completely fuck it up. Why? Because they designed the class structure so it would pass most people. Kids in K-12 don't understand that their education has been nerfed and dumbed down to the point that a kid with proper average intelligence - not stupid, exactly, but not terribly smart either - can pass most classes without trying too hard. I do kinda blame the school system to a degree.
